Berkhamsted is the furthest north west we go, and we go because the houses justify it. A historic market town with a long High Street, Victorian and Edwardian houses around the castle and the canal, and large modern houses on the hills to the north and south, it has a great many garages and a strong preference for doors that suit the building.

A conservation town, and what suits it
Much of central Berkhamsted is a conservation area and a good many houses are listed, so a white steel door is often neither wanted nor allowed. Cedar Doors make solid timber doors to your opening, boarded or panelled, that look like they belong. They automate normally. If your house is listed or you are within the conservation area, check with Dacorum council before ordering, because the permission is yours to obtain, not ours.
The modern houses along Shootersway, Kingshill Way and the newer developments have integral double garages with sectional doors, and those are usually automated already. They want servicing once a year and the occasional new operator; both are jobs we do on the same visit as a quote if you are thinking about a new door as well.
Between the two are the 1930s and 1960s houses with a single up and over door that still works. Automating it is a morning's work with a Hormann Promatic, and it is the cheapest route to an electric door by a distance.
