Period property, and why the door choice changes

For a period house, timber is usually the honest answer. Cedar Doors make solid timber doors to your opening size rather than a stock size, which matters on older properties where nothing is standard. Western red cedar is naturally durable, takes a stain or oil finish well, and looks like part of the building rather than an addition to it.

The trade off is maintenance, and we would rather say so upfront. A timber door needs re treating every few years. If that is not something you want to take on, the glass fibre wood effect doors are a genuine alternative. Wessex do these particularly well and the moulded finish is convincing from the kerb, from £1,081 plus VAT for a Georgian style.

All of these automate. A timber up and over automates normally with a Promatic or Supramatic. A side hinged pair, which suits a lot of period properties, needs a supplementary hinge kit at £80 plus VAT on top of the operator.

If your property is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before ordering. We can supply what you need once you know what you are allowed, but the permission is not something we can obtain on your behalf.
