There is a lot of standard interwar family housing with single garages, and there are also some substantial detached houses with double garages and long driveways, particularly around Grange Park and the Chase. Those two need different equipment.

Single garages and double garages

For a standard single garage, a Hormann Promatic at £360 plus VAT does everything most people want. Enclosed tooth belt drive so it is quiet, 24v motor, soft start and stop, safety reverse, and two handsets so it opens from the car.

For a double width opening, or a heavy timber or insulated door, we would normally quote the Hormann Supramatic or the Garador Auto M2 at £410 plus VAT instead. The extra motor power matters on a wide door, and so does the faster travel speed when you are sitting on the drive waiting for it.

Double door fitting is £150 rather than £100, and if the old door is coming out, removal and disposal is £60 for a double. A new steel or timber frame, if the original has rotted, is £160 supplied and fitted.

Roller shutters are worth considering in Enfield where a garage opens straight onto a busy road and there is no room for a door to swing out. Automatic roller shutters start at £1,350 fully fitted.
